A bio-economic analysis of experimental selective devices in the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) fishery in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Raveau, Adriana; Macher, Claire; Mehault, Sonia; Merzereaud, Mathieu; Le Grand, Christelle; Guyader, Olivier; Bertignac, Michel; Fifas, Spyros; Guillen Garcia, Jordi.
Several fleets with various fishing strategies operate as a mixed fishery in the Bay of Biscay. Among the main fleets, bottom trawlers target Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) and, together with gillnetters, they also catch hake (Merluccius merluccius). Trawling leads to average-size catches that are below the minimum landing size (MLS); such catches are discarded since they cannot be sold. These discards result in negative impacts on stock renewal, as most of them do not survive. This also results in an economic loss for both bottom trawlers and gillnetters since these discards represent a future loss of rent. This study, based on the 2009 and 2010 selectivity experiments at sea, assesses the short- and long-term bio-economic impacts of four...

A cost-benefit analysis of improving trawl selectivity in the case of discards: The Nephrops norvegicus fishery in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Macher, Claire; Guyader, Olivier; Talidec, Catherine; Bertignac, Michel.
The Nephrops trawl fishery is one of the most important fisheries in the Bay of Biscay. The fishery management essentially relies on conservation measures, a total at I owed catch (TAC) for Nephrops together with a mini mum landing size (MLS) and minimum trawl mesh size (70 mm stretched mesh). These measures have failed to prevent high discard levels of many species that characterize the fishery. Nephrops trawlers thus discard about half of their Nephrops catches in numbers (a third in weight) of which only 30% survive. Nephrops discards mainly occur in younger Nephrops age groups below the MLS. This is a waste for the already overexploited Nephrops stock as well as for the fleet. Based on a bio-economic simulation model, the paper analyses the...

Application of Sulfentrazone in Stages of Germination of IAC 90 Cassava Cuttings in Clay Soils and Sandy Planta Daninha
Zimmer,J.S.; Ferreira,S.D.; Ramella,J.R.; Rodrigues-Costa,A.C.P.; Costa,N.V..
Weeds interfere dramatically in the productive potential of cassava; however, information regarding herbicides that are selective to crops is still scarce. Thus, the aim in this study was to assess the initial growth of IAC 90 cassava plants after the application of sulfentrazone at different stages of germination of cassava in clayey and sandy soils. Three experiments were simultaneously deployed: the first experiment consisted in the application of sulfentrazone in the non-germinated stage of cassava cuttings; the second one in the stage of germinated cassavas cuttings (0.9 cm shoots); and the third one in applications in the stage of cassava cuttings with buds emerging (6.5 cm shoots and emerging from the soil). For each experiment the experimental...

Aryloxyphenoxypropionates tolerant and non-tolerant corn: plant-back interval after acetyl-coA-carboxylase inhibitors applications Planta Daninha
R. Mendes,Rafael; M. Franchini,Luiz H.; R. Lucio,Felipe; S. Zobiole,Luiz H.; S. Oliveira Jr.,Rubem.
Abstract Background: The application of Acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors prior to sowing of grass crops may result in crop damage due to residual effect of these herbicides in soil. The hypotheses was that different corn hybrids and ACCase herbicides can result in different plant-back intervals after burndown treatments. Objective: This work was planned to determine safe plant-back periods for three corn hybrids where ACCase herbicides clethodim and haloxyfop-methyl are applied. Methods: Herbicides were sprayed at 21, 14, 7, 2 and 0 days before sowing (DBS) at 192 g a.i. ha-1 (clethodim) and 120 g a.i. ha-1 (haloxyfop-methyl). Individual experiments were carried out with three hybrids: KWS9110 and 2B587 with glyphosate and glufosinate...

Biochemical and Physiological Changes in Rice Plants Due to the Application of Herbicides1 Planta Daninha
LANGARO,A.C.; AGOSTINETTO,D.; OLIVEIRA,C.; SILVA,J.D.G.; BRUNO,M.S..
ABSTRACT The application of herbicides, even if selective, can cause biochemical and physiological changes, resulting in oxidative stress. This stress comes from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species produced due to exposure to the herbicide. However, plants have developed defense strategies, which can be enzymatic or non-enzymatic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological and metabolic changes such as photosynthetic parameters, oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activity of rice plants after applying herbicides. For this, a study was conducted in a greenhouse and laboratory and the treatments consisted of application of imazapic + imazapyr, quinclorac, bentazon, cyhalofop-butyl, penoxsulan, bispyribac-sodium and...

Bycatch and discards: from improved knowledge to mitigation programmes Introduction ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Catchpole, Tom; Cadrin, Steve.
Discarding is considered by many as an important problem in world fisheries. In many regions, data collection onboard commercial vessels has intensified, and the understanding of both human and ecological drivers of discards is improving quickly. Discarding patterns vary widely across regions, fisheries, gears, and species. Fishers' responses to regulations and markets explain these complex patterns, on top of resource availability partly driven by environmental fluctuations. This expanded knowledge base provides an appropriate basis for discussing the discard mitigation measures proposed in various settings. In September 2012, a theme session was convened at the ICES Annual Science Conference in Bergen, Norway, to discuss these issues. This themed set of...

Development of a model for flexural rigidity of fishing net with a spring mass approach and its inverse identification by metaheuristic parametric optimization. ArchiMer
Vincent, Benoit; Di Cesare, Noëlie; Simon, Julien.
The assessment of mesh resistance to opening is a key factor when coming to fishing gear design to study or optimize the fishing selectivity process. Different authors proposed methodologies to achieve twine flexural rigidity identification and mesh opening angle at rest. Their experimental protocols could rely on complex installations and instrumentation, and identification needs dedicated models or software with possible important set up time. Sometimes, different flexural rigidity and rest angle values for a given netting type were proposed depending on identification or experimental conditions, leading to difficulties to choose a value for implementation in netting structures simulation software. The new methodology proposed in this article is based on...

Diel variation in the ascent of fishes up an experimental fish ladder at Itaipu Reservoir: fish size, reproductive stage and taxonomic group influences Neotropical Ichthyology
Fernandez,Domingo Rodriguez; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Bini,Luis Mauricio; Pelicice,Fernando Mayer.
In this study, we evaluated the fish ascent in the experimental ladder at Itaipu Reservoir (Paraná State, Brazil), in relation to diel variation, fish size, reproductive stages and species composition. The study was carried out from October, 1995 to February, 1996 and from November, 1996 to January, 1997 at two points on the ladder (boxes at heights of 10 and 27 m). Twenty-two species were recorded, and Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Schizodon borellii and Leporinus friderici accounted for 86.6 % of the total catch. Fish length did not differ between diel periods and boxes. On the other hand, fish abundance of the main species was significantly influenced by box position, reproductive stage and diel period. The higher box...

Different means contributing to anchored FAD's fishing selectivity in the Lesser Antilles ArchiMer
Reynal, Lionel; Guyader, Olivier; Pau, Cedric; Mathieu, Heloise; Dromer, Clement.
In order to improve the sustainable development of FADs fishing, it is important to reduce the capture of juveniles or species that need a decrease in fishing effort, temporarily or definitively. Through previous statistics data coming from commercial fishing trips and new experimental fishing trips, we compared different gears and techniques selectivity for the species and the size of the capture around FADs. We also compared different type of bait used, the best hours to fish for better productivity and to target adults. Finally we look at the influence of the FAD distance from shore. We observed that fishers’ strategies have a critical influence on FADs setting and targeted species. The further the FAD is deployed and the better yield the fisherman...

DIFFERENTIAL TOLERANCE OF SUGARCANE CULTIVARS TO CLOMAZONE Planta Daninha
BARCELLOS JÚNIOR,L.H.; PEREIRA,G.A.M.; GONÇALVES,V.A.; MATOS,C.C.; SILVA,A.A..
ABSTRACT Weed control is one of the most relevant costs of sugarcane production. If weeds are not controlled at the right time, the productivity and longevity of sugarcane plantations are reduced. In this crop, chemical control is the most used method, since it is efficient and it has a lower cost. Differentiated tolerance of sugarcane cultivars to the herbicide clomazone has been observed in the fields. However, there is no scientific evidence of this effect on the productivity of crops. This study evaluated the effects of clomazone on three sugarcane cultivars (RB966928, RB93579 and RB867515). Herbicide application was performed 40 days after the emergence of sugarcane plants and 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the application, the toxicity caused by the...
